Mother's Day Musings

It is Mother’s Day 2024! In a departure from previous years, I want to call attention to the woman who gave me life and has largely shaped who I am today: my mom, Sydney Dee. As I get older, I recognize what a privilege it is to still be able to celebrate my mom. So who is this dear woman? Let me tell you all about her…

My mom is passionate. She’s passionate about the Lord and about life. She has exemplified to my siblings and me who Jesus is through living out the Gospel and has always pointed us to Jesus.

My mom is funny. She has a dry sense of humor and can keep a straight face, leaving some people to wonder if she’s joking or not. She hates sarcasm though, and will never belittle you or make a mean joke at your expense.

My mom is loving. She loves me and my siblings unconditionally.

My mom is loyal. She is a wonderful friend and will fight to the death for those privileged to call her friend.

My mom is fearless. I am a shy, anxious person, but my mom is not afraid to march up to someone and tell them what she thinks, whether sharing about her Lord or telling a person in a restaurant to treat their elderly parent better (I have personally witnessed both scenarios).

My mom is thrifty. There isn’t a bargain out there that she won’t find. She could spend hours yard sailing, finding the best deals out there.

My mom is generous. She is constantly giving money to some person or another. She loves “squirreling money away” and randomly helping me with an unexpected bill or sending a gift card for a nice date night.

My mom is tough. She has walked through some incredibly dark times, losing several family members in a year. Through it all she has not lost her faith or joy.

This is not an exhaustive list of who my mom is since I could write for hours and still not describe her as a whole. I love my mom incredibly much. She has always made motherhood look easy. I know that she had many struggles and made numerous sacrifices to give me the best, most idyllic childhood possible. I pray that someday I can be half the mom she has been to me.

I love you, Mom, more than there are dirt particles in El Paso. And that’s A LOT! Happy Mother’s Day!
